The single thing that trips up almost every Nigerian renewing a passport from abroad in 2026: the selfie you take inside the NIS Mobile app is not your passport photo. The app's facial capture is a liveness and biometric check. Your actual passport photo is a separate file you upload during the online application — and it has to meet an exact digital spec, or the booklet comes back rejected weeks later.

If you're in the United States, United Kingdom, or Canada, you can now renew your Nigerian passport without setting foot in an embassy. That's genuinely new, and it changes how the photo works. Here's the part no consulate page explains clearly.

What actually changed: contactless renewal is live

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) rolled out contactless passport renewal for the diaspora on a rolling schedule: Canada in November 2024, the UK, Ireland and parts of Asia by February 2025, and the United States on April 11, 2025, with Mexico, Jamaica and Brazil following days later. As of 2026 it is live for eligible renewals in all three of the countries most of our Nigerian visitors write in from.

The whole flow is online: you create an account on the NIS portal, verify your identity with your National Identification Number (NIN) and date of birth, complete the form, choose the embassy or high commission that will process you, upload your documents, and pay. Then you switch to the NIS Mobile app for the biometric step. Finally you mail your current passport and printed payment slips to the mission you selected.

The two images the system asks for — don't confuse them

This is where money and weeks get lost. The contactless process captures your face twice, for two different purposes:

• The uploaded passport photo — a still image you provide during the online application. This is the photo that has to satisfy the NIS specification below. It is the one that gets printed in your passport.
• The in-app biometric capture — a guided facial scan plus fingerprints inside the NIS Mobile app, with a liveness check. This proves you are a real, present person. It is not a substitute for the uploaded photo.

People assume the app selfie replaces the photo upload, skip the upload spec, and grab whatever image is on their phone. That image is almost never compliant. Get the uploaded photo right and the rest of the flow is paperwork.

The exact photo spec for the upload

Nigeria uses the same 35×45 mm standard for the printed photo, but for the online upload what matters is the digital spec. The portal expects a JPEG on a plain white background:

How to make a compliant photo abroad — without a Nigerian studio

You do not need a Nigerian passport studio, and you should be careful with generic ones. The most common failure for diaspora applicants is walking into a US pharmacy, paying for a "passport photo," and getting the American 2×2 inch (51×51 mm) square format. That is the wrong shape and the wrong ratio for Nigeria, and it will be rejected. Nigeria needs the 35×45 mm portrait proportion.

The reliable path is to shoot your own and let software handle the geometry:

1. Stand about a metre from a plain white or very light wall, in soft, even daylight — no hard shadow behind your head.
2. Have someone take the photo at eye level with a phone (a selfie at arm's length distorts your face; avoid it if you can).
3. Neutral expression, mouth closed, hair off the face, no glasses.
4. Run it through a tool that removes the background to true white and crops to the exact Nigerian ratio and pixel dimensions.

Before you start: eligibility and fees

Contactless renewal is for renewals, not everything. To use it you generally need an existing Nigerian passport that is due for renewal, a valid NIN, and no changes to your personal data. First-time applicants, or anyone changing a name or correcting details, will usually still be asked to appear at a consulate in person — and there, printed photos may be requested, so it's worth having a couple ready.

On cost: the diaspora fees were not touched by the 2024 and 2025 domestic price increases inside Nigeria. Applying abroad, expect $150 for the 32-page (5-year) booklet and $230 for the 64-page (10-year) booklet, plus any administrative charge your specific mission adds — the Embassy in Washington, DC, for example, lists a separate card-processing fee. Why uploads get rejected

• Wrong shape — a US 2×2 square or a UK 45×35 landscape crop instead of Nigeria's 35×45 portrait.
• Off-white background — cream, pale grey, or a wall with a visible shadow reads as non-white to the checker.
• File too large — a raw phone photo can be several megabytes; the alternate 600×800 upload must come in under 2 MB.
• Head too small or too large — a full head-and-shoulders snapshot rarely lands in the 70–80% head-height band on its own.
• Smiling or glasses — both are common, both fail.

Is the selfie in the NIS app my passport photo?

No. The in-app capture is a biometric and liveness check. Your passport photo is the separate still image you upload during the online application, and it must meet the 413×531 px white-background spec.

Can I use a US 2×2 inch photo I already have?

No. That square format is for US passports. Nigeria needs the 35×45 mm portrait ratio — a 2×2 photo has to be re-cropped, and cropping a square down usually cuts the head proportion out of spec.
