What Is the Schengen Area?

The Schengen Area comprises 27 European countries that have abolished passport control at their mutual borders. When you apply for a Schengen visa, the photo requirements are standardised across all member states. The current Schengen countries include: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

Photo Dimensions

Schengen visa photos must be 35 mm wide x 45 mm tall (1.38 x 1.77 inches). This is the standard European biometric format. For digital submissions, the resolution should be 413 x 531 pixels at 300 DPI.

ICAO Compliance

Schengen photos must comply with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards. This means the photo must meet specific technical requirements for facial recognition systems, including precise face positioning, consistent lighting, and neutral expression. ICAO compliance is what makes the Schengen standard the most widely adopted format globally.

Background Requirements

The background must be white or light grey, plain and uniform. No shadows, patterns, or gradients. The background must provide clear contrast with the subject's face and hair.

Face and Expression

A neutral expression is required. No smiling, no open mouth. Both eyes must be fully visible and looking directly at the camera. The face must occupy 70-80% of the frame, with the head height between 32-36 mm from chin to crown. The face must be centred and evenly illuminated.

Glasses

Glasses are not recommended for Schengen visa photos. While some consulates still accept photos with glasses (provided there is no glare and the eyes are clearly visible), the growing trend is to reject photos with any eyewear. Removing glasses is the safest option.

Head Coverings

Head coverings are not allowed except for religious reasons. If worn, the full face must be visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, and the covering must not cast shadows on the face.

Photo Recency

Photos must have been taken within the last 6 months and must accurately reflect your current appearance.
