🇪🇸 Spain Passport Photo Requirements (2026 Guide)
Photo Dimensions
Spanish passport and DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad) photos have unique dimensions: 32 mm tall x 26 mm wide (1.26 x 1.02 inches). This is smaller than the standard ICAO format and specific to Spain. For digital applications, use 378 x 307 pixels at 300 DPI.
Background Requirements
The background must be white or very light grey, plain and uniform. Spain follows biometric standards requiring a clean background free of shadows, patterns, or objects.
Face and Expression
A neutral expression with closed mouth is required. Both eyes must be open and clearly visible, looking directly at the camera. The face must occupy approximately 70-80% of the photo area. The head must be straight with no tilting.
Glasses
Glasses are not allowed in Spanish passport and DNI photos. All eyewear must be removed, including prescription glasses, tinted lenses, and fashion eyewear.
Head Coverings
Head coverings are not allowed unless worn for religious reasons. If worn, the full face must be clearly visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.
Photo Recency
Photos must have been taken within the last 6 months and must reflect your current appearance.
DNI vs. Passport

Common Mistakes
- Using EU 35x45mm format: Spain uses its own 32x26mm size, not the standard European 35x45mm. Many photo studios default to the wrong format.
- Wearing glasses: All eyewear must be removed for Spanish passport and DNI photos.
- Wrong orientation: Spanish photos are taller than wide (32mm tall, 26mm wide). Don't confuse the dimensions.
- Smiling or open mouth: Only neutral expressions are accepted under biometric standards.
