🇯🇵 Japan Passport Photo Requirements (2026 Guide)
Photo Dimensions
Japan uses a square format: 45 x 45 mm (1.77 x 1.77 inches). This is distinct from both the US 2x2 inch square and the European 35x45mm rectangle. Japan is one of the few countries outside the US that uses a square passport photo. For digital submissions, the resolution should be 531 x 531 pixels at 300 DPI.
Background Requirements
The background must be white or light-coloured, plain and uniform. No patterns, shadows, gradients, or objects. The background should contrast clearly with the subject's hair and skin.
Face and Expression
A neutral expression is required. No smiling. The face must be centred and looking directly at the camera with both eyes open. The head height must be 34-36 mm from chin to crown. This is a relatively large head-to-frame ratio (about 76-80%), meaning the face should fill most of the photo.
Glasses
Glasses are not allowed in Japanese passport photos. All eyewear must be removed, including prescription glasses and sunglasses.
Head Coverings
Head coverings are not allowed. The full head, hairline, and forehead must be visible. Japan does not make religious exceptions for passport photos.
Photo Recency
Photos must have been taken within the last 6 months and must accurately reflect your current appearance.

Common Mistakes
- Using US 2x2 dimensions: Japan's 45x45mm is smaller than the US 51x51mm. The two square formats are not interchangeable.
- Head too small: Japan requires 34-36mm head height (76-80% of frame), larger than the US requirement. The face must fill more of the photo.
- Wearing glasses: All eyewear must be removed. No exceptions for prescription lenses.
- Hair covering forehead: Bangs or fringes that obscure the forehead can cause rejection. Pin hair back if needed.
- Submitting a European 35x45mm photo: Despite also being used in Asia, the European rectangular format does not work for Japan.
