🇷🇺 Russia Passport Photo Requirements (2026 Guide)
Photo Dimensions
Russian passport photos must be 35 mm wide x 45 mm tall (1.38 x 1.77 inches). For online applications through Gosuslugi (government services portal), digital photos should be 413 x 531 pixels at 300 DPI in JPEG format, between 10 KB and 5 MB.
Background Requirements
The background must be white or light grey, plain and uniform. No patterns, gradients, or visible objects. The background should provide good contrast with the face and hair.
Face and Expression
A neutral expression with closed mouth is required. Both eyes must be open and clearly visible, looking directly at the camera. The face must occupy 70-80% of the photo area. The head height from chin to crown must be 32-36 mm.
Glasses
Glasses are not allowed in Russian passport photos. This includes all types of eyewear — prescription glasses, tinted lenses, and sunglasses must all be removed.
Head Coverings
Head coverings are not allowed unless worn for religious reasons. If a religious head covering is worn, the face must be fully visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.
Internal vs. International Passport
Russia has two passport types: the internal passport (used domestically) and the zagranpasport (international passport). Both require the same 35x45mm photo dimensions, but the internal passport uses black and white or colour photos, while the international passport requires colour photos only.
How Russia Compares to the US
| Requirement | Russia | United States |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | 35 x 45 mm (rectangular) | 51 x 51 mm (square) |
| Pixels | 413 x 531 | 600 x 600 |
| Background | White or light grey | White or off-white |
| Glasses | Not allowed | Allowed (no glare) |
| B&W Photos | Allowed (internal only) | Not allowed |
| Head Height | 32-36 mm | 50-69% of frame |
Common Mistakes
- Wearing glasses: All eyewear must be removed for Russian passport photos.
- Using black and white for international passport: The zagranpasport (international) requires colour photos. B&W is only for the internal passport.
- Wrong head size: The face must occupy 70-80% of the frame. Photos taken too far away will be rejected.
- File size issues: Digital uploads must be between 10 KB and 5 MB. Photos that are too compressed or too large will fail.
- Shadows or uneven lighting: The background must be uniform with no visible shadows.
